Drawing inspiration from the Sori Yanagi Chair, the new stool series reimagines the iconic backrest of Sori Yanagi Chair into the seat itself. The result is a remarkably simple yet striking piece of furniture that exudes a modern aesthetic.
"At the heart of the stool is a commitment to simplicity and beauty," say GamFratesi. "We were inspired by the wood bending techniques of the manufacturer and sought to create a stool that celebrates the inherent beauty of this craftsmanship.”
The manufacturer of the stools has specialized in wood bending for decades. Bending such large and long pieces of wood requires a high level of craftsmanship and expertise, including a deep understanding of wood properties, precise temperature control, and the ability to manipulate materials without compromising their integrity. This skillful approach ensures that each piece maintains its strength and aesthetic appeal while achieving the desired curves and shapes.
With their dual traditional background, Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi draw on the classic Danish furniture and craft tradition as well as the classic Italian intellectual and conceptual approach. From this cross-cultural substrate they create furniture that respectfully reflects tradition while also featuring unique embedded stories, symbols and associations, often expressed in a minimalist idiom.
Their product designs often draw inspiration from nature, as seen in many of their creations. For KOYORI, GamFratesi have designed products with references to a cat, such as the Miau series, and to branches and leaves in the Edaha chair. This time, the Uribo stools—Uribo meaning baby wild boar in Japanese—continue this nature-inspired approach.
GamFratesi note, "for us, it is natural to connect these products and design with nature. Wood itself is a natural material. We can give the product a personality
by shaping them into different designs."
Like classical, often primitive stools, the Uribo stools are available in two heights. Featuring clean lines and a simple aesthetic, they are versatile additions to any interior. The straight edges give a modern touch, while the use of the manufacturer's established techniques ensures both quality and durability. The legs have an expressive simplicity, elevating the stool’s overall beauty.
Perfect for use alongside a sofa or as standalone seating, the stool serves as a curated accent that enhances any living space. With its impeccable quality and thoughtful design, it reflects the manufacturer’s rich history and showcases the excellence of their craftsmanship.
“We believe the stool reflects both Japanese and Danish design and craftsmanship," GamFratesi add. "Our aim was to capture the essence of these traditions and express it through a stool that is both functional and beautiful. Though it’s a small item, it’s something we truly love.”
